Cutting-edge Endodontics in Tirana: Save Your Natural Teeth

Thanks to the use of the optical operating microscope and latest-generation digital treatments, at Gaia Dental Clinic we treat deep dental infections quickly, definitively and completely painlessly.

What makes our endodontics effective?

Surgical Microscopy

We use optical magnification to locate even the smallest root canals that are invisible to the naked eye.

3D Apex Locators

We detect the exact length of the canals digitally, eliminating margins of error and reducing X-rays.

Reciprocal Instrumentation

We use flexible nickel-titanium files for fast, safe and anatomical root canal shaping.

Painless treatments

Targeted anesthesia protocols and conscious sedation option to eliminate any discomfort or anxiety.

Indications

When is root canal treatment necessary?

Endodontic therapy (commonly known as root canal treatment) is necessary when the dental pulp—the soft tissue inside the tooth that contains blood vessels and nerves—is severely inflamed or infected by bacteria. This condition is often caused by deep, untreated tooth decay, dental trauma, or crown fractures.

Early intervention helps eliminate acute pain and, above all, avoid premature tooth loss by preserving the surrounding bone structure.

  • Intense, throbbing, persistent pain that increases when chewing

  • Acute and prolonged sensitivity to thermal stimuli (hot and cold)

  • Localized gum swelling, redness, or appearance of fistulas

  • Discoloration or progressive yellowing of the damaged tooth

The approach

Preserving your natural tooth: our top priority

No implant or prosthesis, no matter how advanced, can ever perfectly match the biomechanical properties of a natural tooth. For this reason, Gaia Dental Clinic's clinical philosophy is strictly conservative: before considering an extraction, we explore every single treatment option offered by microscopic endodontics.

Saving a tooth through a professionally performed root canal treatment not only protects the natural alignment of your mouth, but also represents a more economically and biologically advantageous choice in the long term than extraction surgery and subsequent prosthetic replacement.

  • Maintenance of natural bone and occlusal stability

  • Immediate restoration of full original chewing strength

  • Minimally invasive procedure compared to extraction and insertion of implants

  • Long-lasting results with success rates above 95%

FAQ about root canal treatment

How long does it take to complete a root canal treatment?

Thanks to the modern nickel-titanium mechanical instruments used at Gaia Dental Clinic, most endodontic treatments are completed in a single session lasting approximately 60 minutes. In cases where the infection is particularly extensive or complex (such as root canal retreatment), a second session may be necessary to ensure complete sterility of the canals before definitive sealing.

I feel pain after a root canal? Is this normal?

The procedure itself is completely painless thanks to local anesthesia. For 2-3 days following treatment, it's perfectly normal to feel some sensitivity or mild soreness when chewing, due to the natural healing process of the tissues surrounding the root. This temporary discomfort is easily managed with common painkillers our staff will prescribe.

What is endodontic retreatment and when is it done?

This involves repeating root canal treatment on a previously root canal-treated tooth (often in other facilities) that has developed a new infection, a granuloma, or persistent pain. This occurs if the root canals were not completely cleaned, sealed, or identified due to a lack of adequate instrumentation. Using an operating microscope, we remove the old filling material, disinfect the endodontic space again, and seal it properly.

Does a root canal tooth become more fragile? Should it be protected?

Yes. A tooth stripped of its pulp loses blood supply and, over time, tends to become more dehydrated and fragile than a healthy tooth. Furthermore, these teeth often already have significant damage to the crown due to early decay. To prevent future fractures and ensure the tooth's longevity, we almost always recommend protecting it with a ceramic inlay (overlay) or a fixed prosthetic crown.

Root canal treatment (endodontics) in Tirana: microscopic technology for clinical success

Endodontics represents the precision micro-routine within the dental practice. At Gaia Dental Clinic in Tirana, we treat the endodontic space with rigorous protocols to ensure complete elimination of bacterial load. Treating a tooth from the inside means thoroughly cleaning complex, curved, and often branching root canals like microscopic culverts: a challenge we successfully tackle every day by combining highly specialized skills and cutting-edge technology.

The revolution of the optical surgical microscope

The operating microscope has redefined the limits of restorative dentistry. Working with magnification up to 20-30 times and coaxial LED illumination allows us to clearly see the inside of the pulp chamber and canals. This technology is essential for identifying extra anatomical canals (such as the infamous fourth canal of upper molars), removing old posts or instruments fractured during previous incorrect treatments, and sealing root perforations, transforming hopeless cases into lasting clinical successes.

Mechanical instrumentation and activated ultrasonic irrigation

Our endodontic protocol abandons traditional manual instruments in favor of torque-controlled reciprocating rotary systems. This dramatically reduces chairside operating time and ensures perfect canal shaping without altering its original anatomy. Furthermore, the crucial disinfection phase is not performed with simple passive rinsing; instead, we chemically activate disinfectant liquids using advanced ultrasound, reaching and sterilizing even the deepest dentinal tubules where bacteria nest.

One session or two?

If the tooth isn't actively infected, treatment can be completed in a single 60-90 minute session. If there's drainage or an abscess, we schedule a second session a week or two later to treat the infection and then place a permanent filling.

Three-dimensional thermoplastic sealing

Once cleaned and shaped, the root canal system must be hermetically sealed to prevent subsequent bacterial recolonization. At Gaia Dental Clinic, we use the thermoplasticized warm gutta-percha technique. This biocompatible material, once heated, is injected and liquefies inside the tooth, three-dimensionally filling all irregularities, lateral canals, and accessory canals of the root. The result is a perfect and stable seal over the years, preventing the formation of granulomas or periapical lesions.
