Why Regular Dental Radiology Checkups

A dental X-ray is not an administrative detail: it is the tool that lets your dentist see what is invisible to the naked eye. Caries between teeth, root problems, bone level, periapical lesions — all of these live below the surface. This guide covers why regular radiographic check-ups are part of serious prevention.

What a dental X-ray shows

Intraoral X-rays (single tooth or small group) show fine detail: interproximal caries, filling quality, apical infections, root resorptions. A panoramic X-ray gives an overview of both arches, useful for orthodontic or surgical planning. A 3D CT (CBCT) adds the third dimension: bone volume, relationships with nerves and sinuses, root anatomy.

Why periodic check-ups matter

Many dental pathologies are silent in the beginning. Interproximal caries can progress for months before becoming painful, and by then treatment is more invasive and expensive. A periodic radiographic check — typically bite-wing every 12-24 months in asymptomatic patients, more often in higher-risk patients — catches problems while a minimal intervention is still possible.

When a 3D CT is needed

A 3D CT does not replace traditional X-rays; it complements them when more detail is needed:

• Implant planning: bone volume, inferior alveolar nerve position, maxillary sinus.
• Complex extractions: impacted third molar, tortuous roots or roots close to vital structures.
• Complex endodontics: additional canals, root fractures, large apical lesions.
• Diagnosis of cystic or tumour lesions.

Safety and dosage

Modern dental X-rays use very low radiation doses. A digital panoramic exposes you to roughly 0.01-0.02 mSv, comparable to a day of natural exposure. A 3D CT, in low-dose dental mode, is also much smaller than a medical CT. ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) is the guiding principle: an X-ray is taken when the diagnostic benefit is clear.
