VELscope is a fluorescence device used as an adjunct during visual examination of the oral cavity. It helps the clinician highlight areas of the mucosa that may warrant closer attention. It is important to make clear from the start that this is an adjunctive tool for visual screening of oral mucosal anomalies, not a stand-alone diagnostic test. This guide covers how it works and its role within a full examination.

How it works

The device emits a blue light at a specific wavelength. Healthy mucosa, excited by this light, emits a uniform apple-green fluorescence. Some altered areas may appear darker or with a different fluorescence pattern. It is a visual input that adds to the clinical exam — it does not replace it.

What VELscope is NOT

This is the most important part of this guide. VELscope:

  • Is not a diagnostic test. It cannot make a diagnosis or confirm the nature of a lesion.
  • Does not replace biopsy. Histological exam remains the reference standard when a lesion requires characterisation.
  • Does not replace clinical evaluation by a clinician. Visual and palpation exam by a professional remains the foundation of oral screening.

VELscope is an adjunctive tool; it does not replace biopsy or clinical evaluation by a clinician.

When it can be useful

As part of a periodic check-up, especially in patients with known risk factors for oral mucosal alterations: smoking or alcohol history, prolonged sun exposure on the lip, previous lesions. The added value is to give the clinician one more input to integrate with history, visual exam and palpation.

What happens if an area is flagged

An area with altered fluorescence does not automatically mean pathology. It is often inflammation, local trauma, lichen, hyperkeratosis. The clinician decides the next step: observation over time, removal of any irritating factor, or referral for specialist review and — when indicated — biopsy. No important clinical decision is made based on VELscope alone.

The bigger picture

A regular check-up, conducted by a professional who takes time to examine the oral mucosa, remains the cornerstone of prevention. Tools like VELscope are complementary, not substitutive. If you have risk factors or notice a lesion that does not heal within 2-3 weeks, book a visit: a prompt evaluation is what really matters.
